The fork in the road of photography i.e. straight-shooting vs. manipulation

When Steiglitz assessed photography in 1934 he identified two trends: that of the straight-shooter and the manipulator. This was all in the heyday of traditional wet-darkroom photography. Film was the medium and no one then could foresee the advent of digital photography and how it would expand explode photographic capability and creativity....which is where we are now.
