The value of art lies with the artist’s vision…not the tools or the materials…but how well the individual applies techniques and uses the tools may have an enormous affect on the presentation of the vision.

The book, The Artist as Photographer, by Marina Vaisey was suggested to me to get an historical perspective on the relationship between painting and photography. Although it is out of print it was easily found on the internet. I was immediately amazed by the number of painters who have used the camera to develop and create their art. The fork in the road of photography i.e. straight-shooting vs. manipulation
When Steiglitz assessed photography in 1934 he identified two trends: that of the straight-shooter and the manipulator. This was all in the heyday of traditional wet-darkroom photography.
